Zusammenfassung
Eine kanadische Studie berichtet, dass 125 Patienten von 4000 untersuchten Fällen bei Krankheitsbeginn jünger als 16 Jahre waren (3 Prozent) [1]. Von diesen jungen Patienten gehörten 75 Prozent dem weiblichen Geschlecht an. Die Anfangssymptomatik unterscheidet sich nicht von der des Erwachsenen, allerdings steht meistens ein einziges Symptom im Vordergrund. Dem Beginn der Krankheit geht bei der Hälfte der Betroffenen ein unspezifischer Infekt, in der Regel einer der Atemwege voraus. Besonders häufig sind Störungen der Sensibilität und des Sehvermögens (Optikusneuritis). Manchmal fällt anfangs das klinische Bild einer akuten Enzephalopathie auf, die auf eine Virusenzephalitis oder einen Hirntumor schließen lässt. Die Ergebnisse der Zusatzuntersuchungen gleichen denen, die man beim Erwachsen gewinnt. Bei einem enzephalitischen Beginn kann der Zellgehalt im Liquor beachtlich (bis zu 900 Zellen/µl) steigen und der Eiweißgehalt erhöht sein (>1 g/1) [2].
