Abstract
Technology is being integrated more and more in surgery to increase the quality of patient treatment. The surgeon’s manual skills are complemented by navigation systems, surgical robots or individualised mechanical guides. Navigation systems track the motion of surgical instruments relative to the patient’s organs. Surgical robots have been developed for hard and soft tissue surgery. By using this type of surgical assistant, the motion of the tool is constrained or filtered in some way or another to achieve higher accuracy and precision, maintaining at the same time high standards of safety. Individualised surgical guides constitute a cost efficient solution to provide the surgeon with enhanced safety when performing potentially dangerous surgical actions. This paper will review some developments in the areas of computer integrated surgery mentioned above, and indicate some pathways for further progress.
