Zusammenfassung
Die Entwicklung der Schulterprothese begann 1893 mit den Arbeiten des französischen Chirurgen J. P. Pean. Er implantierte bei einem Patienten mit tuberkulöser Gelenksdestruktion eine Schulterendoprothese aus Platin und Hartgummi, die durch den französischen Zahnarzt Michaels entwickelt wurde. Bei dieser Indikation war es nahezu zwangsläufig, dass Pean gleichzeitig auch als erster eine der möglichen Komplikationen miterleben musste. Zwei Jahre nach der Implantation musste die Prothese aufgrund von unkontrollierbaren Infektionen wieder entfernt werden. Mit diesem ersten Versuch zeigte es sich jedoch bereits, dass durch ein künstliches Schultergelenk eine Schmerzreduktion mit Zunahme der Gelenkfunktion erreicht werden kann.
