Function of Cytokines in Lymphocyte Development

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 251))

Abstract

All hematopoietic cells, including lymphocytes, are derived from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) (Morrison et al. 1995). The process of hematopoiesis is initiated with an asymmetric stem cell division, giving rise to one cell that remains an HSC and another that begins to differentiate. Subsequent development leads to the loss of self-renewal activity and commitment to a specific hematopoietic lineage, thus restricting its differentiation potential. Cytokines have been shown to play important roles in hematopoiesis, regulating the viability, expansion and differentiation of developing cells (Watowich et al. 1996).
