Abstract

The results of this study confirm the existence of sexual dimorphism in the two limbic structures studied—the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis and the amygdala. Several new aspects of sex differences are established together with the confirmation of previously reported gender-specific patterns of volume and neuronal densities in some of the nuclei. The experimental manipulations of the hormonal environment during the critical period of sexual differentiation and in puberty allow one to make some conclusions on the possible mechanisms that are occupied with the formation of sex differences in the BST and the amygdaloid nuclei. The expression of sex differences in various life periods is detected to establish the time of occurrence.
