Abstract

The last detailed report on the progress in the area of systematics and evolution of cyanobacteria was included as a special paragraph in a review on the systematics and evolution of algae, covering the period 1988-May 1990 (Melkonian 1991; Progress in Botany 52:273–276). In his 1996 review on algal systematics and evolution (Prog. Bot. 57:281–311), Melkonian no longer dealt with cyanobacteria, except for aspects relating to the cyanobacterial origin of plastids. From 1990 to 1998, several hundred publications referring to general aspects of cyanobacterial systematics and evolution have appeared; some 120 will be specially mentioned in the present report.

For a recent report on the Systematics and Evolution of Algae (excluding blue-green algae), see Progress in Botany 60:369–412 (Preisig 1999).
