Abstract

Endonasal surgery parallels the historical development of stapes surgery. The first era of stapes extraction began with Kessel’s report in 1876 [46] and ended with its condemnation by Siebenmann in 1900 [65]. Endonasal ethmoidal surgery was developed approximately 25 years later [6, 7, 20, 21, 43, 45, 47, 51, 52, 57, 66]. Because the risk was judged to be too high (as in stapes surgery), endonasal surgery was temporarily abandoned by most surgeons within 25 years and was continued by only a few [5, 22, 23, 25, 60], including four generations of physicians in the Heermann family at our hospital.
