Abstract

Scalp hair loss has been considered, throughout the whole history of mankind and still, as an important problem for both men and women, with deep psychosocial consequences in terms of self-perception and behaviour (Passchier et al. 1988; Girman et al. 1998; Lilly et al. 1998). Many authors have been arguing whether to look at this problem in a context of a normal biological process or as a health phenomenon that should be dealt with as such. These questions however did not inhibit the scientific interest in trying to unravel the mechanisms involved in hair-growth/hair-loss regulation and drugs that could modulate this process. The high prevalence of common baldness or androgenetic alopecia is clear to most of the readers as far as men are concerned, but this is not the case for women. Specific studies however also point to a high incidence of this alopecia in females, especially after menopause (Dawber 1997; Montagna and Camacho 1997). When we questioned a group of women, 25% complained of having had a problem related to hair loss (Van Neste and Rushton 1997).
