Zusammenfassung
Aquatische Ökosysteme produzieren etwa genauso viel Biomasse wie alle terrestrischen Ökosysteme zusammengenommen. Die Primärproduzenten stellen die Basis eines weitverzweigten Nahrungsnetzes dar, das bis zu Fischen, Vögeln und bis zum Menschen reicht. Darüber hinaus spielen aquatische Ökosysteme eine entscheidende Rolle im globalen Klimageschehen, da sie jährlich etwa 100 Gigatonnen Kohlenstoff in Form von CO2 aus der Atmosphäre aufnehmen; das Reservoir in der Atmosphäre beträgt etwa 735 Gigatonnen, wodurch die Größenordnung der Biomasseproduktion aquatische Ökosysteme deutlich wird. Das meiste gebundene CO2 wird direkt oder indirekt wieder in die Atmosphäre abgegeben, wodurch ein geschlossener Zyklus entsteht. Ein Teil der jährlichen Aufnahmerate in der Größenordnung von 4 Gigatonnen wird jedoch durch die „biologische Pumpe“ in das Sediment verlagert und damit aus dem System entnommen.
