Nitric Oxide: A True Inflammatory Mediator

  • Chapter
Nitric Oxide

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 143))

Abstract

Nitric oxide (NO) is a colorless gas at room temperature and is one of the simplest molecules known. For more than 300 years, it was considered mainly as an environmental pollutant and product of bacterial metabolism. Important discoveries in the 1980s showed that NO can be synthesized by mammalian cells, and it has since been implicated in a wide variety of regulatory mechanisms ranging from vasodilatation and blood-pressure control to neurotransmission (MONCADA and HIGGS 1993). NO is also involved in non-specific immunity and participates in the complex mechanism of tissue injury, acting as a major mediator of inflammatory processes and apoptosis. This work reviews the data showing that NO plays an important and complex role in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
