Zusammenfassung

Die Leber ist als zentrales Stoffwechselorgan zwischen Pfortader und unterer Hohlvene in den Blutkreislauf eingeschaltet. Auf diese Weise erhält sie den größten Teil ihres Blutes direkt vom Gastrointestinaltrakt, so daß die meisten der dort resorbierten Nahrungsstoffe, Vitamine, Medikamente und Xenobiotika ihrer Kontrolle oder Verarbeitung unmittelbar unterliegen. Außerdem erfüllt sie durch ihren hohen Gehalt an Makrophagen in der terminalen Strombahn der Sinusoide eine wichtige Filterfunktion für Endotoxine und Keime aus dem Darm.
