Spiral CT of the Abdomen

Part of the book series: Medical Radiology ((Med Radiol Diagn Imaging))

Abstract

Pancreatic cancer is the ninth most common malignancy in Europe and the United States and the fourth most frequent cause of death related to a malignancy. The prognosis is poor, and the diagnosis is made late. Surgery provides the only effective treatment, but in only 10–30% of patients is the condition amenable to resection at the time of diagnosis (Freeny et al.1988; Megibow et al.1995; Warshaw et al. 1990; Warshaw and Fernandez-Del-Castillo 1992). Computed tomography (CT) is the most useful modality for the evaluation of pancreatic neoplasms. It is used both for diagnosis and for preoperative selection of patients who may undergo radical pancreatoduodenectomy (Aspestrand and Kolmannskog 1992; Baker 1991; Freeny et al. 1988, 1993; Warshaw et al. 1990).
