Abstract
Interventional radiology (IR) of peripheral vascular disesases comprises therapeutic measures with the use of imaging systems (Athanasoulis et al. 1982; Dondelinger et al. 1990; Dotter and Judkins 1965; Dotter et al. 1966; Günther and Thelen 1988; Lammer and Schreyer 1991; Zeitler 1997). IR includes:
-
- The recanalization of arteries and veins in symptomatic patients. Vascular obliterations can be the result of thrombus formation, arteriosclerosis or tumor infiltration. In these cases, IR uses different therapeutic principles: angioplasty, thrombolysis, percutaneous thrombus and embolus extraction, stent implantation, and others
-
- The occlusion of vessels in congenital and acquired arteriovenous shunts.
-
- The control of bleeding of varying nature, including traumata.
-
- The occlusion of tumor-feeding arteries.
-
- The extraction of foreign bodies, such as catheter material, broken guidewires, stents, and other material.
