Abstract
The titanium industry dates from the late 1940’s and has grown very rapidly since that time, largely because of pressure from the aerospace industry. The motivation for the growth was that titanium is light (density approximately midway between aluminium and iron) and has a high strength/weight ratio. It has good corrosion resistance because of a protective surface TiO2 film.
