Abstract

Before the introduction of antibiotics, infections of the hand frequently resulted in severe morbidity, and even on occasion in septicaemia and death [1]. Today prompt detection and diagnosis of infection with appropriate medical and or surgical management will usually ensure a satisfactory clinical outcome. Infections of the hand and wrist may be classified by temporal occurrence (acute or chronic), site (bone, joint, soft tissue or combined) and by causative organism (bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic). Attention to the clinical history may reveal predisposing factors for infection including prior trauma, remote infection, systemic disease (diabetes and immunosuppression) and occupational exposure [2]. This chapter will cover the common manifestations of the various infections indicating the appropriate use of imaging.
