Zusammenfassung
Hypnotika werden zur symptomatischen Therapie von Schlafstörungen eingesetzt. Der Übergang zu den Sedativa, die vorwiegend tagsüber eingenommen werden, ist fließend. Bei einigen Wirkstoffen muß aufgrund der langen Halbwertszeit auch bei Verwendung als Hypnotikum mit einer Sedation während des auf die Einnahme folgenden Tages gerechnet werden. Die Abgrenzung gegenüber den Tranquillantien (vgl. ) ist oft willkürlich und basiert vermutlich weitgehend auf Marketingaspekten.
