Abstract
Japan's geographical area is 378,000 km2, yet 80% of the land is highly mountainous and not inhabitable. Almost a quarter of the population is concentrated in the greater Tokyo metropolitan region. The population of 127 million (1999), the eighth largest in the world, makes Japan one of the most densely populated countries (337 persons per square kilometer). The number of households is 46 million. Japan's demographic profile is aging the fastest among developed countries. According to the United Nations (1996), the proportion of the population over 64 years old is expected to reach 20.7% by the year 2010.
