Abstract
Taiwan, an island country occupying an area of 36,000 km2, is one of the Pacific Rim's most affluent nations. Every since the KMT party moved the government of the Republic of China to Taiwan, the country has experienced continuous economic growth. For instance, the annual per capita income, based on purchasing power parity, is expected to reach US $ 16,854 in 2000, ranking the people in Taiwan the 18th richest in the world. Meanwhile, the 6.66% economic growth rate this year will put Taiwan in the third highest place in the world. Although the unemployment rate last year reached its all time high of 2.92%, it is still an impressive figure compared with those in other countries.
