Abstract
There is a growing concern world-wide over a series of large-scale threats to human society, such as unbalanced population growth, new or re-emerging diseases, environmental degradation, unsustainable consumption of food, energy and natural resources. It is recognised that each of these problems is complex and that they are closely connected. Global science is, therefore, challenged both in the complexity of problems requiring attention, as well as in society’s increasing demand to utilise scientific results in a knowledge-based development.
