Abstract

The discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Roentgen on 8 November 1895 marked the birth of imaging as a clinical speciality. Within 6 months X-ray systems were in clinical use in hospitals across Europe and the United States (Abrahams 1986). Throughout the following century other new imaging technologies such as ultrasound, CT and MRI repeatedly demonstrated their ability to revolutionise clinical practice in all areas of medicine.
