Constitutive Transport Element-Mediated Nuclear Export

  • Chapter
Nuclear Export of Viral RNAs

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology ((CT MICROBIOLOGY,volume 259))

Abstract

The molecular biology of retrovirus replication and gene regulation has been intensely analyzed for many years. These studies have made it clear that retroviral expression is controlled not only at the transcriptional level, but also by posttranscriptional mechanisms that regulate the export of RNA from the host cell nucleus to the cytoplasm. This involves the action of proteins that actively shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm using specific nuclear import and export signals. Thus retroviruses have become important model systems for nucleo-cytoplasmic trafficking (for previous reviews, see Hammarskjold 1997; Gullen 1998; Pollard and Malim 1998)
