Abstract
The unification of Germany has been described as “the gift of the century.” Dramatic political developments in the former Soviet Union and the disintegration of the Communist economic bloc provided Germans with a historic opportunity to reunite. The opportunity arrived so suddenly and unexpectedly that, to many Germans at the time, it seemed like a colossal, unaccountable gift.
