Starburst Galaxies: Near and Far

Part of the book series: Springer Proceedings in Physics ((SPPHY,volume 88))

Abstract

Virtually all young starbursts are dusty, and hence can be understood only with a suite of techniques not strongly affected by extinction. Synthesis modeling developed around such techniques provides satisfactory fits to all the relevant observables. These models show that starbursts are short-lived and have extremely high star forming efficiency. Further advances will require improvements in the way boundary conditions such as bolometric and K-band luminosity, ionizing star effective temperature, and supernova rate are estimated and applied in the models.
