Identification of ISOPHOT Deep Field Sources

Abstract

We have completed an analysis of the deepest far-infrared (90 (μm,175 μm) survey made using the ISOPHOT photometer aboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The cumulative number counts for two 44′ x 44′ regions in the Lockman Hole appear to be ~ 10 times higher than expected from a no-evolution model. Optical counterparts for the brightest 175 μm sources, ( S 175 > 150 mJy), have recently been identified using I-band and K-band imaging plus VLA-B 20cm continuum maps. Keck spectroscopy of a subsample of these sources shows that they are dusty emission line galaxies at redshifts z < 1.5, with infrared luminosities1 in the range L ir ~ 1010 – 1013 L . These ISOPHOT sources plausibly represent a link between the low-z luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) detected by IRAS and the more distant submillimeter sources that have recently been detected in deep 850 μm surveys with SCUBA.
