Abstract

Compared to other types of extragalactic objects, such as AGNs or galaxy clusters, starburst galaxies might appear to be fairly unspectacular X-ray sources. Their broadband X-ray luminosities range from a few times 1038 to at most 1042 ergs s−1, and X-ray emission represents only one one-hundredth of a percent of their bolometric output. X-ray emission is, however, a direct consequence of star formation, and at energies above ~ 2 keV, X-ray observations offer a view of the starburst phenomenon that is relatively free of the effects of extinction and reprocessing—something which is not available in many parts of the electromagnetic spectrum.
