Abstract

Since standby power consumption of TVs has been decreasing rapidly over the last years, the total energy consumption of a new TV is dominated by the consumption in the on-mode. It is well known that power consumption in the on- mode depends on various features of a TV, e.g. screen size, scan rate, luminance and sound level. Thus, contrary to standby power consumption, the on-mode power consumption of TVs can not be compared directly to determine which is the most efficient.

Earlier SAVE research showed that it is possible to model power consumption of TVs in the on-mode by a set of equations taking into account energy relevant features. This model was used to develop an energy efficiency index for TVs. This index enables comparison of TVs on efficiency regardless of the features.

The parameters of the model have been tuned by using a large set (102 samples) of measurement data of modern TVs. It is shown how the energy efficiency index can be used for an energy label for TVs and other labelling schemes, and what the impact is on energy consumption when setting certain minimum levels.

Furthermore, an outlook is provided to other applications of the energy efficieny index, e.g. for computer monitors.
