Abstract

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of blindness in people older than 65 and the second most common cause for patients aged 45–64 years (Ganley and Roberts 1983; Leibowitz et al. 1980a, Leibowitz et al. 1980b; Klein et al. 1992), There are approximately 200,000 new cases of ARMD each year, with over 100,000 people considered legally blind. The prevalence ranges from 0.1% in persons aged 43–54 years to 7.1% in those older than 75 (Klein et al. 1992; Mitchell et al. 1995; Vingerling et al. 1995).
