Abstract

Quality of life is a complex and difficult-to-define concept with physical, spiritual, and psychosocial components. This concept is directly dependent on the health status of an individual and closely related to the subjective perception of well-being. During the past decade substantial efforts have been made to find measurable parameters of “health-related quality of life” (HRQOL) and to define a standardized health status instrument. Different quality of life studies based on patient self-assessment reports (Mackworth et al. 1992) or using multiple instruments (Taphoorn et al. 1992) have been used for this purpose.
