Abstract

The management of rare central nervous system (CNS) tumors varies greatly, depending upon several key factors. The location of the tumor may be the most important consideration in the management, specifically the neurosurgical management, of any intracranial lesion. The location, of course, determines what neurological deficits a patient may have and the degree of resectability of the tumor. For instance, a tumor involving the basal ganglia is managed in a fashion completely different from that of a similar tumor found in the anterior frontal lobe. The histological behavior of the tumor is also very important. Does the tumor invade surrounding tissue, or does it merely displace it? Does it engulf important structures such as normal blood vessels and cranial nerves, or is it well encapsulated? What is the tumor¡¯s natural history?
