Abstract

Non-Hodgkin¡¯s lymphomas that develop and remained limited to the CNS (and the eye) are classified as primary CNS lymphomas (PCNSL). They arise from the brain, the spinal cord, leptomeninges, or eyes. Originally described as perithelial sarcoma microglioma, or reticulum sarcoma, most PCNSL proved to be of B cell origin following the introduction of immunohistochemical studies of surface markers (Burstein et al. 1963; Rubinsten 1972; Taylor et al. 1978).
