Abstract

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a sophisticated form of radiotherapy that usually delivers a large single-fraction dose of irradiation to small, well-defined intracranial targets. This is accomplished with a high degree of accuracy (¡À1 mm). Stereotactic guidance is provided by the use of modern imaging modalities, notably computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or cerebral angiography. Noninvasive, bloodless delivery of a tumoricidal dose to a selected intracranial target-volume, with concurrent sparing of adjacent normal tissue, can be accomplished by various modalities, but is generally done by the cross-firing of photon radiation-beams through a precise target point from different angles, based on stereotactic localization with the aforementioned imaging techniques.
