Abstract

Low-grade gliomas pose a daunting challenge to all clinicians involved in their management.Far from a single clinicopathological entity, this group of tumors is characterized by numerous histologic subtypes each possessing their own unique biological characteristics and behavior. Subdivisions of these neoplasms include low-grade astrocytomas (LGAs),pilocytic astrocytomas, oligodendrogliomas, gangligliomas, dysembryonic neuroepithelial tumors, pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas, and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas. As each subgroup is overall clinically distinct, this chapter will focus primarily on the most common type of low-grade glioma-the astrocytomas. We will also further restrict our review to grade I and grade II astrocytomas, as defined by the Kernohan classifications, or grade II tumors, as categorized by Daumas-Duport. Although some of the observations and recommendations suggested by this chapter may also apply to other types of low-grade gliomas, the lack of consistent literature on these rarer entities makes them even more difficult to analyze
