Abstract

Meningioma is a relatively common primary intracranial tumor arising from the meninges. This tumor represents approximately 20% of all intracranialneoplasms (Prados et al. 1998; Mahaley et al. 1989; Walker et al. 1985; Laws and Thapar 1993). It is of interest to note that this incidence was nearly twice as high in the state of Minnesota (Walker et al. 1985). The reason for this higher incidence of meningioma in this state was not immediately apparent. Peak incidence of meningioma is 55 years of age, although this tumor has been reported at any age, including its uncommon incidence in children. Meningioma occurs primarily in women, with a reported female to male ratio of 2–3:1 (Prados et al. 1998; Laws and Thapar 1993). Over the past 20 years a substantial body of evidence has been accumulating about the hormonal influence on tumor growth, with particular reference to increased tumor growth rate during pregnancy (Lesch et al. 1987; Schrell and Fahlbusch 1991). It is also to be noted that this tumor is more common in those with breast cancer (Rubinstein et al. 1989), and there is good evidence for the presence of progesterone and estrogen receptors in meningioma cells (Lesch et al. 1987; Schrell and Fahlbusch 1991; Rubinstein et al. 1989).
