Zusammenfassung
Optische Freiraumverbindungen standen am Anfang aller Kommunikationssysteme. Mit Rauch, Feuer, reflektiertem Sonnenlicht und später auch anderen optischen Zeichen (Flaggen, optischer Telegraph) war es möglich, Nachrichten schnell über größere Entfernungen zu übertragen. Diese Art von Kommunikationstechnik wurde durch die elektrische Kommunikationstechnik abgelöst, bei der di Freiraum- bzw. Funkübertragung neben der leitungsgebundenen Übertragung von Anfang an eine große Rolle spielte. Die moderne optische Kommunikationstechnik, die sich nach der Erfindung des Lasers schnell etablierte, basiert fast ausschließlich auf leitungsgebundenen Übertragungsverfahren. Die optische Freiraumübertragung in der Atmosphäre konnte sich bis auf wenige Anwendungen wie z.B. kurze Datenverbindungen über Entfernungen einige cm bis km wie z.B.optische Interconnects, Anbindung von Peripheriegeräten an pes, nicht durchsetzen. Der Hauptgrund dafür sind die Instabilitäten des Mediums Atmosphäre. Laserstrahlen werden durch Temperaturgradienten und Turbulenzen in der Luft abgelenkt und verformt und durch Nebel und Regen stark gestreut. Das führt zu einer stark schwankenden Streckendämpfung, die bei größeren Entfernungen nicht mehr kompensiert werden kann.
