Zusammenfassung

Es ist ein alter Traum der Menschheit, Krankheiten, insbesondere die des alternden Menschen, zu verhüten statt sie heilen zu müssen. Archetypus-ähnlich zieht sich der Gedanke durch die Geschichte des Heilens, dass die Ursachen für Krankheit im Verlassen einer naturphilosophischen oder monotheistischen Ordnung des Individuums liegen. Rituale Handlungen und Fürbitten waren über Tausende von Jahren die ästhetischen Zeichen von Individuen oder sozialen Lebensgemeinschaften, nicht aus diesen heilbringenden Ordnungen verstoßen zu werden. Die vier apokalyptischen Reiter — Hunger, Krieg, Krankheit und Tod — holten den so aus der Ordnung gefallenen alternden Menschen gleichsam ein und bestimmten über sein Schicksal.
