Zusammenfassung

In den letzten Jahren konnten mehrere zum Teil umfangreiche Multicenter-Studien den therapeutischen Nutzen von Valproinsäure in der Behandlung von Kopfschmerzen belegen. Ein besonderer Anwendungsbereich entstand für die Valproinsäure in der prophylaktischen Behandlung der Migräne. Klinischer Haupteffekt ist dabei eine signifikante Reduktion der Attackenfrequenz, die etwa den Effekten der Betablocker entspricht. Im folgenden Beitrag werden die Ergebnisse der bisher durchgeführten klinischen Studien besprochen sowie die möglichen Wirkmechanismen in der Kopfschmerztherapie diskutiert.
