Abstract
One of the most challenging rhinosurgical procedures is the functional and aesthetic correction of the cleft lip nasal deformity. Since this varies widely in its severity, it requires a high degree of individualization and a great deal of special consideration as to the timing of surgery and selection of an appropriate surgical method, especially as far as the lower lateral cartilages and the nasal base are concerned. In the newborn some repositioning of the alar structures, such as elevation of the displaced lower lateral cartilage and its fixation with transalar mattress sutures, is often done at the time of the original cleft lip repair (McComb 1986).
