Zusammenfassung

Der Anteil ungewollt kinderloser Ehepaare wurde 1988 für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf ca. 600000 geschätzt. Weltweit haben etwa 50–80 Mio. Menschen eine eingeschränkte Fertilität. Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation WHO rechnet mit ca. 2 Mio. neuen infertilen Paaren pro Jahr. Sterilität besteht definitionsgemäß erst dann, wenn trotz ungeschütztem Geschlechtsverkehr eine Schwangerschaft nach 1 bzw. 2 Jahren nicht eingetreten ist. Dabei liegt in je ca. 40 % ein männlicher bzw. weiblicher, und in ca. 20 % ein kombinierter Sterilitätsfaktor vor.
