Zusammenfassung
Das durch Staphylococcus aureus verursachte Toxic-shock-Syndrom (TSS) ist eine akute febrile, exanthematische, multisystemische Erkrankung. Obwohl das TSS 1978 von Todd et al. erstmals bei Kindern beobachtet wurde, setzte man diese Erkrankung in den folgenden Jahren praktisch mit dem menstruellen TSS gleich. In der Folgezeit nahm aber der Anteil menstrueller Fälle ab und der nicht-menstrueller TSS-Fälle zu (1994 in den USA 42%). Die Bedeutung des TSS liegt v.a. in der nicht unerheblichen Akutletalität und dem Risiko bleibender Spätfolgen.
