Es gibt etwa 50 Mill. km3 Süßwasser auf der Erde. Davon sind im Untergrund ca. 15 Mill. km3 gespeichert und etwa 5 Mill. km3 wirtschaftlich gewinnbar (Maniak, 1997). Das auf der Erde gespeicherte Süßwasser verteilt sich prozentual wie in Tabelle 1.1 angegeben.
