Effects of Ultraviolet-B Radiation on Terrestrial Organisms and Ecosystems with Special Reference to the Arctic

  • Chapter
UV Radiation and Arctic Ecosystems

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 153))

Abstract

Apart from the interest in ultraviolet-B radiation as a factor among others that affect the biosphere, there has been focus on this topic during the past few decades due to the depletion of stratospheric ozone, and fear that it may have adverse effects. Thus, attention has been focused on inhibiting and destructive effects of the radiation. Recently, increased attention has been paid also to other effects.
