Zusammenfassung

Die kardiovaskulären Erkrankungen stellen nach wie vor die führende Todesursache der industrialisierten Welt dar. Die dabei auftretende männliche Dominanz vor dem 75. Lebensjahr hat oft die Tatsache verschleiert, dass kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen auch die führende Todesursache der Frau sind! In den Entwicklungsländern liegen Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen an zweiter Stelle der Mortalitätsstatistik, nur wenig übertroffen von Infektionskrankheiten des Respirationstraktes. 1995 starben weltweit 15 Mio. Menschen an kardiovaskulären Krankheiten. Das entspricht rund 30% aller weltweiten und rund 50% aller Todesfälle in der westlichen Welt. Dabei waren 7 Mio. der kardiovaskulär bedingten Tode auf eine koronare Herzkrankheit (KHK), 4,6 Mio. auf zerebrovaskuläre Ereignisse zurückzuführen. 80% aller Todesfälle betrafen Menschen über 65 Jahre (WHO Statistik).
