Abstract
A survey is given of the author’s attempts to construct preference functions of Dutch political parties from direct interviews with their representations in Parliament. The role preference functions play in the theory of optimal economic policy is reviewed. The technique of transforming the interview results into preference functions is shown and the scope of the method to support policy statements is analyzed with special attention to the character of measurements.
