Syringomyelia Associated with Diseases at the Craniocervical Junction

Abstract

Diseases at the craniocervical junction that lead to syringomyelia interfere with CSF circulation and physiological movements of the cerebellum and brainstem. Clinical presentation typically starts with symptoms related to compression of the brainstem and cervical cord at the foramen magnum. Clinical signs of the syringomyelia develop at a second stage. The most common, by far, pathology at the craniocervical junction associated with syringomyelia is Chiari I malformation.
