Abstract
Currently, domestic sewerage systems are mainly based on collection of wastewater and centralized end-of-pipe treatment. As with integrated water treatment and recycling processes in industry on-site treatment schemes are becoming more popular. Greywater is the low contaminated fraction of domestic wastewater and thus offers the highest potential for water recycling. Major concerns of authorities and consumers are microbiological contamination and smell and odor of recycled water. The use of greywater for toilet flush has been demonstrated in two installations in Austria. The water-recycling process is based on a combination of membrane separation (nanofiltration) and disinfection (UV, chlorination). Even the very strict requirements of local authorities could be met after startup and optimization period. Long-term monitoring of the system is in progress. Greywater recycling for toilet flush is an efficient tool for reduction of overall water consumption in the domestic sector especially for medium-to large-scale housing units. This will also help to preserve natural water resources.
