Abstract
Programs such as the Integrated Water Resources Management and the European Water Framework Directive are international approaches to better and more sustainable water supply in the world. In this chapter the project Research into the Development of the Water Quality of the River Spree is introduced as an example of a joint task of highly specialized engineers, biologists, chemists, computer scientists and others who strive to develop a water quality and water quantity model of the River Spree. Through the aid of this model, the water management of the River Spree will be optimized and water supply for the users will be secured. Besides a full description of the situation in the catchment area and the explanation of how the project is structured to cope with the most complex situation of a catchment area highly influenced by lignite mining, also detailed information is given about how the objectives are implemented in the modules and which the main problems were. The objective of this chapter is to illustrate the multiple aspects which have to be regarded when modeling a catchment area of a river.
