Abstract

Due to the availability of very potent immunosup- pressive drugs and to refinements in surgical techniques, the results of liver transplantation have improved during the last decade. Currently, liver transplantation is a widely accepted effective therapeutic modality for a variety of irreversible acute and chronic liver diseases, offering 1- and 5-year patient survival rates of approximately 70%-90% and 50%-70%, respectively. With these achievements the indication criteria for liver transplantation have been expanded and the number of transplantations being performed has increased. However, nowadays the supply of grafts cannot meet the needs, so that the number of patients on the waiting list is steadily growing. This underscores the importance of establishing strict, generally accepted guidelines for the selection of liver transplant recipients. In addition, the prolonged waiting period for a graft makes optimal timing of liver transplantation more difficult. In the future, it will probably be necessary to put patients on the waiting list before they actually need an organ to ensure future availability of a graft.
