Abstract

Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is the sixth most common cancer in the United States in both incidence and mortality. NHL may involve the conjunctiva (bulbar or palpebral), lacrimal gland, or posterior orbit either primarily or as a manifestation of systemic disease. Primary orbital lymphomas account for approximately 1% (Fitzpatrick and Macko 1984) of all NHL, with an annual incidence of 1 case per million. Although uncommon, NHL is the most common malignancy of the orbit and accounted for 55% of malignant orbital tumors in a report from the Florida Cancer Registry (Margo and Mulla 1998). The median age of patients at diagnosis is approaching 65 years, and the diagnosis is rare in children and adolescents (Kennerdell et al. 1999). The incidence is equal in men and women. Orbital NHL appears to be becoming more common, with a 155% rise in incidence noted between 1987 and 1993 in the Florida Registry (Margo and Mulla 1998).
