Abstract
In 1997 and 1998 there were many reports of anomalous weather conditions in different parts of the globe: the droughts in Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, the associated smoke pollution in the Malaysian and Indonesian region, hurricanes battering the west coast of Mexico, abundant rain on the coastal plains of South America in places where it hardly ever rains. Why? Although the weather always seems to be anomalous somewhere, 1997/98 seem to be more anomalous than most.
