Abstract

The School of Psychology of the University of Costa Rica has been carrying out intervention in emergencies and disaster since 1989. Crisis situations at institutional, communal, group, family and individual levels have demonstrated that each person experiences and elaborates disaster situations differently, and that men, women, children and adolescents, and the elderly develop mechanisms that can facilitate or become obstacles for adequate reactions to these crisis.
